Top 4 Fish and Chip Shops in Grimsby, England

Not that an excuse is ever needed to fill up on battered haddock but National Fish & Chips Day is here!

To mark the occasion, we’ve taken a look at the very best chippies around the region, as selected by you, on TripAdvisor.

Of course, everyone has their favourite and there are sure to be many notable omissions here, but these are the top 8 currently standing above all others on the oft-controversial review site.

Steels CornerHouse Restaurant

Of this local institution, a visitor from Doncaster, said: “Visited bank holiday Monday. Had been before on a recommendation. The jumbo haddock was huge.

“Went for the medium haddock. Absolutely fabulous. Tasty chips, perfect peas. The full package. All the staff are friendly without being overbearing. Great value. Planning our next trip soon. Favourite chippy restaurant in the world!

Meanwhile, a diner all the way from New Zealand had some very high praise, saying: “Always friendly service, great food and great atmosphere at Steels. Grimsby haddock is this NZ fisherman’s wife’s all-time favourite and cooked to perfection at Steels.”

Ocean Fish Bar

A traveller from Sheffield found little to complain about, saying: “I simply cannot fault it on any level – service, friendly staff, quick for fresh food delivered to the table, excellent value and quantity and price. My only ‘grumble’ was that I could not eat it all.”

Declaring it the “best fish and chip restaurant in Cleethorpes”, a resort resident said: “Staff and owner are very friendly. Always very clean. Quick service and nothing too much trouble. Food is excellent.”

Meggies

Another resort favourite which has reached some lofty heights. One fan said: “Meggies freshly cook their fish which is always worth the wait. The chips were also good and the staff polite and friendly. Would definitely recommend to a friend.”

Another visitor said: “We each has the large Cod Fish Supper for £9.50 and the fish was absolutely huge! Served with a mound of chips, mushy peas, bread and butter and a brew to go with! Perfect!”

The Cleethorpes Mermaid Fish and Chips

A visitor from across the Humber said: “I and my partner came here over the Easter weekend.

“I had a chip bun and my partner had fish and peas.

“The prices are reasonable and the portions are great, I had plenty of chips.

“My partner loved his meal, he said he would eat it again.”

Ernie Beckett

A traveller from Oxford said: “Was recommended this place by a couple of locals. We enjoyed what we had and the food was hot and freshly cooked, It was delicious. The staff were polite and friendly.”

Closer to home, a fan of the chippy from Barton said: “I visit Ernie Beckett (Ernie’s) far more regularly than one should visit a chip shop, but who can resist such gorgeous food? It’s probably a good job I have to travel 30 minutes to get there…

“Visited on a Monday afternoon for a treat with my daughter. I had a regular fish and chips (great value at £9) and my daughter had chicken nuggets and chips. (Amazing value at less than £5!)

“Both plates came out, overflowing with beautifully cooked, pale golden chunky chips. The chicken nuggets are how all nuggets should be, crispy batter, tender middles and the fish? Sweet zombie Jeebus, for a ‘regular’ it was huge, as always, beautifully battered, gorgeously cooked and amazingly tasty. The staff of Ernie’s all work hard and provide such great food and service.
